First Certificate in English (FCE)
First Certificate preparation at Milner College is offered only as a full time course, entry to which is gained after passing our pre-entry test.
FCE is a suitable course for students whose English level is upper-intermediate, and who can deal confidently with a range of written and spoken communications. At the end of the course, FCE students should have a very good grasp of vocabulary and be able to construct a convincing argument. They should also be aware of varying degrees of formality and politeness as expressed in language.
FCE is a useful qualification as it is recognized by some employers and universities as proof of a sound intermediate level. Those working in industries which require use of English, such as business or tourism, will benefit greatly from our FCE course.
The exam held at the end of the FCE course is comprised of five separate sections:
- Reading - 1 hour 15 minutes
- Writing - 1 hour 30 minutes
- Use of English - 1 hour 15 minutes
- Listening - 40 minutes
- Speaking - 14 minutes
The FCE examination is approximately equivalent in level to TOEFL 475 - 500 and TOEIC 625 - 660.
